2008 Mid Winter Raid! Postponed
Newsflash
Because of the rescheduling of the SSANZ Race 1 to Saturday 19 July the club's new RAID! event has be postponed to a later date in the summer. We'll let you know once its confirmed.
Proposal for NEW RAID EVENT
1. Following on from our experience in Sweden of a “Raid” type event, we thought it would be fun to try this out with the multi-hull fleet. Its purpose is to provide a mid winter challenge round the gulf, hopefully at high speed, and also convene together as fleet for the Saturday night.
2. Rather than make it an official race, the idea would be to trial an event this winter and see how it goes. We have been in touch with the Kawau Island yacht Club, and they will be open for showers, meal, and the bar the weekend of the 19 July & 20 July 2008. This means that we can race round the Gulf all day on Saturday and convene at the Yacht Club on Sat night. The format will be as follows:
(1) Saturday 19 July. 8am start off Westhaven. Race to two or three different way points during the morning with the aim of all convening in a bay around lunchtime for 1 hour, calculated from when 75% of the boats have arrived. The last one will involve getting someone ashore to complete the leg. The racing will then recommence with a massed start. The racing will then continue for the afternoon with two or three way points to go to before ending in Bon Accord. These will be in places given by Lat/Long co ordinates and may or may not involve rounding a mark and may be places not commonly raced to.
(2) Kawau Island yacht Club for a get together Sat night.
(3) Sunday morning start off Bon Accord and race back to Auckland. Depending on the weather a format similar to Saturday may be adopted. Alternatively there will be a non-stop race back to Auckland via a number of way points.
3. As the event is in its formative stage, the idea is to do it with as minimum organisation as possible and without involving large number of organisers. The competitors will be therefore be required to take their own times on rounding the various way points and to submit these at the end of the racing for handicap calculations. Each sail between waypoints will count as a leg.
4. If there are members who would like to bring their boat but not race, then there would be plenty of opportunity to go to one of the way points and take times, or help with the restarts, and then come on to Kawau for the evening.
5. The idea would therefore be to end up with an overall winner on line and overall handicap places by an accumulation of points for each leg. This keeps it interesting.
6. The way points will be set in reasonably challenging areas and points will be awarded for each stage between the way points.. On the basis of the forecast on Friday these will be set and passed around Friday evening and Sunday will be worked out first thing and way points circulated an hour before the restart. The idea is to make it quite challenging but also fun.
7. There will be no notice of race, nor any entry fee. Once we know who is interested we will finalise the information and circulate it. Prizes are being worked on, if you have any interest in providing one let me know.
I briefly canvassed this at this Thursday’s meeting and there was good interest. If you would like to participate either in the raid, or would like to bring your boat in a support role please get in touch. look forward to hearing from you.
